Arref Mak, a name I haven’t heard in a very long time. One that’s somewhat unusual and has stuck with me over the years.
I’ve been on the internet since I was in gradeschool. I’m 21 now. When I was first on the internet about 10 years ago I was a little 6th grader obsessed with Roger Zelazny and Amber. I was pretty heavily into the various Amber MUSH’s around at the time (Blood of, and ?) and scrounged the internet all of the time for Amber material and info on DRPG campaigns and mythology.
I found your name several times back in those days, and several times since when I reminisce or run into something about Zelazny. In fact I think I got into something of an argument with you about Phage Press on Yahoo-groups ages and ages ago.
I started googling Amber today for some reason or another, and have ran into you again. The changes in the way the internet works are legion compared to back in the yahoo-groups and usenet days.
In the interspacing years I turned my hobby into a profession. I got into western martial arts, 15th C. German Longsword and it’s surviving High Middle German manuscripts describing it’s use. I’ve studied history, classical fencing, read the rest of Zelazny’s work (have a decent collection of 1st edition and signed books), and now work in marketing and the like.
You’ve evolved with the internet as well. You have a blog, flickr and who knows what else. I see a picture of you for the first time. All very strange to me.
Anyway, I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that today you have been my lens for viewing my growth for the last several years. I hope I haven’t made you feel old :D.
Re: Wow, time as a lens
So Google is your friend!
Thanks for touching base, S. Ten years probably means I don’t remember much about arguing with anyone on Yahoo groups, but Phage Press is still around too. And Phage has sold the rights to a second edition game to a newer company. Perhaps we will all see some ‘spruced up’ Amber stuff in a year or three.
Aren’t internet years 10 to one? That puts us into our second century of interest in Zelazny and Amber. Nope, not feeling old.
There are 2200 entries here. The ratio of Zelazny to chat is 1:1 with Amber stuff almost all of that.
S is referring to web pages created several years before the blog (1997). Those pages are still out there. I haven’t pulled anything yet, though it sure could use a reorganization effort (volunteers, anyone?)
Here’s to the next ‘century’.
